Should I send “Save-The-Date” cards or magnets to my wedding guests?
If you are recently engaged you may be wondering if you should send “Save the date cards” out to friends and family. With guests often scattered across the country and everyone’s busy schedules to consider, Save-the-Date cards are a great way to give advance notice of your special day.
Save-the-Date cards (or magnets) should definitely be sent when family and friends will have to travel to your wedding location, or if your special day lands on or around a holiday. They allow your guests ample opportunity to request time off from work, arrange for babysitters, and if needed, arrange hotel and/or travel.
These days, however, more and more brides send these cards regardless of the time and location of their wedding. Why? Save-the-dates provide a fun opportunity to get the word out and foreshadow the style of your big event.
The only information you must include is your names and wedding date, although I suggest including location information as well so wedding guests can begin their travel plans. Aim to send save-the-date cards soon after you secure your date and venue, or about 4-6 months prior to your wedding. Remember, everyone who receives a save-the-date also receives an invitation, so have your guest list finalized prior to sending them. You can, however, always add guests later (there is no rule that says everyone must receive a save-the-date card). Although formal replies are not required, you can get preliminary attendance estimates through word-of-mouth.

Here at Allison Hendrickson Design & Photography we recommend sending Save-The-Date Magnets to your friends and family unless it is within a few weeks of when you’re planning on sending your wedding invitations. We’ve found that potential guests will save your magnets on their fridge or other special places long after the actual wedding date has even passed. Sending a magnet several months before it is typical to send an invitation is a great courtesy to your guests to give them additional time to plan to attend your special day as well as make sure they don’t plan something else that will interfere with their attendance. Magnets are also becoming popular as wedding favors at your reception as a memento that your friends and family can take home to remember your special day by.
